Democrats voted for nominees for Lt. Governor and Attorney General for the November 2001 general election. Because Mark Warner was the only candidate to file for the nomination for Governor, no election was needed for that office.
Richmond Mayor Tim Kaine, son-in-law of former Republican Governor Linwood Holton, won the Lt. Governor nomination over two members of the Virginia House of Delegates, Alan Diamonstein of Newport News and Jerrauld Jones of Norfolk. Kaine faced Delegate Jay Katzen, a Republican of Fauquier County, in the general election, and won.
In the race for Attorney General, Delegate Donald McEachin won the Democratic nomination over State Senator John Edwards of Roanoke, Delegate Whitt Clement of Danville, and attorney Sylvia Clute of Richmond (previously a candidate for U.S. Senate in the 1994 Democratic primary). McEachin lost the general election to Republican Jerry Kilgore, a former prosecutor and Secretary of Public Safety under Gov. George Allen (1994-98).
