ON THE BALLOT THIS NOVEMBER 6th:
| Virginia General Assembly (both House and Senate) | |
| County Boards of Supervisors and Constitutional Officers | |
| Most County School Boards and 1 Town Council |
ALSO: May 1 council elections in the Town of Vienna
On Tuesday, May 1, there was a general election for Town Council in the Town of Vienna (Fairfax County).
All 40 members of the State Senate and 100 members of the House of Delegates will be up for election on Election Day, November 6, 2007. Senators serve four-year terms and Delegates serve two-year terms. There are also elections for local constitutional officers, boards of supervisors and school boards in most counties this year. Constitutional officers include Clerk of Court, Commissioner of Revenue, Commonwealth's Attorney, Sheriff and Treasurer. The Clerk of Circuit Court serves an eight-year term and the others serve four-year terms.
By state law, in localities and legislative districts where a primary is not held, the parties could nominate candidates only between May 11 and June 12.
Party primaries were held on Tuesday, June 12 (the filing deadline for primary candidates was Friday, April 13). There is no party registration but voters must choose one party's primary and cannot "cross-over" to vote in the other party's primary for different offices. Click here for a list of where primaries were called (PDF format). See below for the lists of candidates where primaries were held.
Independents and party nominees chosen by other methods filed by 7:00 p.m. on June 12 for the November general election. Where special elections are held on November 6, candidates have until August to file. All candidates run as Independents for School Board seats and the political parties do not nominate candidates for that office (but parties may endorse candidates).
